Bangchak Executive Shares Views on “SAF: The New Alternative for the Future of the Thai Aviation Industry towards the Green Economy” at the 20th Aviation Talk Academic Seminar

Thamarat Paryoonsuk, Senior Executive Vice President, Refinery Business Group, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited participated in the 20th Aviation Talk academic seminar on “SAF: The New Alternative for the Future of the Thai Aviation Industry towards the Green Economy” organized by the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University on 18 June 2023 at Kasetsart University.

Thamarat shared Bangchak’s perspective on the production of sustainable aviation fuel, stating that Bangchak Group, as a leader in energy transition, has set targets to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2030 and Net Zero GHG Emissions by 2050, implementing the BCP 316 NET plan which includes improving production efficiency, integrating technology, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering the Low Carbon Society ecosystem.

Bangchak conducted a study on the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which is the most important alternative to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the aviation industry. In 2022, Bangchak established BSGF Company Limited to produce SAF from used cooking oil, with an initial production capacity of 1 million litres per day. This is part of the energy transition driven by Bangchak’s Greenovation.

Moreover, he also shared the development of fuels, supply chain and production processes of SAF, which consists of two major steps, namely, pre-treatment to remove impurities and contaminants within used oil, and the production process (to change and crack the molecular structure using hydrogen), which must be certified for the production such as from the ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification). Bangchak will be the first and only producer of sustainable aviation fuel or SAF from used cooking oil in Thailand, placing Thailand at a critical step in the reduction of the greenhouse gas emission from the aviation industry.
