“Bangchak” Highlights Regenerative Fuels as a Solution for Sustainable Mobility at the 13th Greenovative Forum 2023
Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited held its annual seminar in 2023, the 13th Greenovative Forum, titled “Regenerative Fuels: Sustainable Mobility”. The forum explored critical issues regarding the future fuels that will drive sustainable mobility, featuring prominent international speakers and experts reflecting the perspective of various sectors. The event at M Tower drew in almost 300 participants, and about 2,700 online viewers. H.E. Mrs. Astrid Emilie Helle, Norwegian Ambassador to Thailand, Pinsak Suraswadi, Director General, Department of Marine and Coastal Resource, and Sakrai Kongdham, Assistant Director, Business Development Division, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand also attended the forum.
Chaiwat Kovavisarach, Group Chief Executive Officer and President, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, delivered the keynote address on “Regenerative Fuels, Sustainable Mobility”, shedding light on the future fuels driving sustainable mobility. Given the current global emphasis on clean energy, Hydrogen emerges as a promising alternative. However, its widespread adoption requires time for the development of cost-competitive technologies for production and practical usage. Despite this, considering the world’s daily fuel demands of around 220 million barrels, liquid fuels remain a critical form of energy given their high energy density and convenient transportation.
For the travel and transportation sectors, which continue to have high demand for fuel, sustainable solutions are imperative. One key aspect of this solution involves the adoption of Regenerative Fuels, composed of clean molecules such as biofuels, do not produce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Additionally, it is critical to develop technological innovations to manage carbon dioxide, such as Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS), in order to pave the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future, even in the presence of fossil fuels on the planet.
In the aviation sector, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) stands out as a sustainable alternative energy for the transportation sector. The aviation industry has set a target to achieve Net Zero by 2050, and in this pursuit, Bangchak Group has taken a pioneering role by establishing the production and distribution of SAF from used cooking at the Bangchak Phra Khanong Refinery. SAF is a fuel that the global aviation sector can readily adopt as an alternative without any adverse effects on engines.
The forum also featured prominent speakers and experts from leading global energy companies who provided updates on critical issues related to future fuels driving sustainable mobility. These experts included, Mr. Ji Yang Lum, Associate Director, Biofuels Research and Analytics, S&P Global Commodity Insights, who addressed “Global Transportation with Sustainable Fuel Market”, the leading production technology providers for the gas, petrochemical, and refining industries , Mr. Michael Spivey Sales Director, Honeywell UOP, shared “A Total Solution for Low Carbon Intensity Renewable Fuels,” and Mr. Jeff Caton Commercial Director – Asia Pacific, Axens Group, presented insights on “Solutions for Energy Transition by Innovated Technologies.”
The forum ended with a panel discussion, titled “Pioneering Sustainable Aerospace.” Joined by M.L. Nathasit Diskul, President, Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services Public Company Limited (BAFS), Dr. Kan Ern Liew, Head of Technology, Airbus Malaysia, Yongyut Lujintanon, Area Manager IATA Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, Piyachart Isarabhakdee, Chief Executive Officer, BRANDi and Companies, Inthipon Tamsukhin “Maxine”, Green Content Creator, Suvikrom Amranand “Per”, Host and CEO, Black Dot Company Limited, and moderated by Pongsuk Hiranprueck “Nui Beartai”. The diverse panelists reflected perspectives from various sectors, including airlines, service providers, aviation industry promoters, as well as business and leisure travelers. The discussion focused on driving sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and strategies to promote accessible SAF and enhance its practical applications to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation industry, towards the target of Fly Net Zero in the future.
Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limtied has held its annual seminar since 2011, to raise public awareness of pressing social and environmental issues and explore collaborative solutions or developments, especially innovations that address global warming and the challenges of climate change in the past 4 – 5 years.
