“Fry and Fly” (Tod Mai Ting)
A Simple BCG Economy Model That Starts in the Kitchen
“I’m ecstatic to learn that used cooking oil will be used to produce aviation fuel! It’s like a huge burden’s been lifted off my back!”, candidly shared Dr. Sitthichock Ketjinda, aka “Innovation Chef” Jib Inkaya, a food consultant at Nikao Corporation Company Limited.
Chef Jib continued, “I cook. I deep fry food every day, and I am concerned about how the used cooking oil goes to waste. In professional food preparation, we rely on oil filtration systems that properly segregates the waste and prevent adverse effects on the environment. I was delighted to learn about the “Tod Mai Ting” (lit. Fry Don’t Toss) campaign which buys used cooking oil to produce aviation fuel and I was even more excited to know that Thailand has achieved this level of advancement. The name of the campaign is catchy, and I am thrilled that it is a reality.”
“Tod Mai Ting” campaign
BSGF Company Limited’s “Tod Mai Ting” campaign encourages the public to refrain from polluting the environment through improper disposal of used cooking oil, and not reusing cooking oil that - through repeated usage - undergoes a chemical reaction that results in harmful substances with adverse health effects. This campaign provides a solution by encouraging the public to sell used cooking oil at designated Bangchak service stations, which will then be processed to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF); a holistic alignment of the entire Bio-Circular-Green or BCG Economy Model.
Chef Jib Inkaya specializes in innovative frying techniques for plant-based foods, with over 20-years of commitment to combat global warming and restore the environment by reducing livestock farming and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
“Used cooking oil can be reused. Just not for cooking. Sell it at a Bangchak service stations to produce sustainable aviation fuel. It’s so much better. It saves the planet, it’s healthy, and it’s an additional income” Chef Jib concluded.
Thanonchai Mongkolsupa, a teacher at Poonsin (Petchsuk Uppatham) School, a local community school within the Bangchak refinery community, expressed how buying used household cooking oil to prevent reuse or improper disposal leading to waste and environmental contamination is already a great initiative, but knowing that the oil can be used to produce aviation fuel is even more impressive.
“At the heart of it all, everyone wants to help the environment, but lacks a reliable buying and selling system. If a system can be put in place with a network of designated selling locations offering advice on equipment, handling, and awareness campaigns; the project will go far. People who would normally throw away small quantities of used cooking oil will start to collect, like a savings account, and sell their stash to create something new, and help the environment as well.”
The “Tod Mai Ting” campaign has made the BCG Economy Model a more easily accessible part of daily life, starting from kitchens and restaurants in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area in December 2022.
